One letter, Feb. 2, 1802, from a C. Swan in Washington (probably D.C.) to Vance. Swan discusses dividing "the Western Country into three states" and that someone named Worthington opposes the measure and is "inimical" to territorial governor Arthur St. Clair, who was related to Vance.

Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. Vance operated a general merchandise store in Indianapolis and was a contractor for the construction of the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroad and other railroad lines.
